La synthèse des deux sources spirituelles de la civilisation occidentale, l antique et le christianisme, dans la représentation du poète est emblématique du rôle primordial donné par Gustave Moreau à la spiritualité chrétienne dans la création, à partir de la Grèce antique, d  une poésie personnelle [ ] appropriée à nos besoins d âme et d esprit moderne  ; The French painter Gustave Moreau (1826-1898), who was trained in the Humanities and in the teaching of the Ecole des beaux-arts, is heir to the great Historical painting. The Ancient Greece has an essential place in his work. Far from any ethnographical approach, the artist s vision of Greece is shaped through his erudite exploration of the Classics, by reading and observing antiquities in compilations of engravings and in museums. Greece, which he calls Mother of art and thought, Land of the Muses , he represents in painting through the allegorical figure of the poet, the artist s original mirror in the theoretical context of the ut pictura poesis.
