La latinité carolingienne passe plus ou moins implicitement pour un retour à des normes  classiques  , après le désordre apparent de la latinité mérovingienne. En réalité, on n a pas fini de reconsidérer cette dernière ; par ailleurs, il reste à détailler les modalités de la réforme linguistique lancée par Pépin iii. À travers la grille de la  sociolinguistique diachronique romane  , l analyse croisée d un corpus de diplômes originaux et de couples de textes hagiographiques permet d entrevoir les lignes de forces parfois paradoxales qui sous-tendent la composition de textes en apparence très différents. Les niveaux de langue carolingiens s avèrent ainsi plus larges et fluctuants qu à l époque précédente, tandis que la chronologie de leur apparition varie selon les sources. En effet, la langue de nombreux diplômes reflète de plus en plus étroitement les structures de l oralité acrolectale romane jusqu au couronnement impérial de Louis le Pieux, époque où la langue des réécritures hagiographique a déjà largement rompu avec les compromis langagiers qui, à la fin du viiie siècle, peinaient à assurer son intelligibilité auprès des illettrés.

Carolingian Latinity is more or less implicitly thought to be a return to classical standards, after the apparent disorder of Merovingian Latinity. Actually, one has not ended reconsidering the latter; moreover, the modes of the linguistic reform initialized by Pippin iii are still waiting to be detailed. By means of the diachronic Romance sociolinguistics , a cross-analysis of a corpus consisting in original diplomas and couples of hagiographical texts enables to make out the sometimes paradoxical characteristics underlying the writing of apparently very different texts. The Carolingian language levels thus proves to be larger and more fluctuating than in previous times, whereas their chronological appearance can vary from one kind of text to another. Indeed, many diplomas, in their language, reflect more and more closely the structures of acrolectal orality till the imperial coronation of Louis the Pious, in times when the language of hagiographical rewritings has already neatly broken with the linguistic compromises that managed less and less, at the end of the 8th century, to ensure its intelligibility to illiterate people
