If the artistic production of ca. 1500 has begun to emerge from the shadows, the patronage of the great French courtiers of those days has yet to be studied. Admiral of France Louis Malet de Graville was one of the leading political figures who participated in the renewal of fashions and tastes. The Admiral’s patronage of social convenience has first been analyzed. His condition and his wealth obliged him to a certain show of ostentation and generosity. As the owner of extensive lands in Ile-de-France and Normandy, he was one of the main supporters of the rebuilding of the counties undermined by the troubles of the Hundred Year War. Being a pious lord, he cared for the salvation of his tenants by funding the rehabilitation of many parish churches and by supporting the reform of the Gallican Church. But the Admiral also contributed to the arts through his commissions of illuminated manuscripts. He was surrounded by a network of patrons who all engaged the same artists. Despite lively exchanges, the Admiral’s artistic patronage remained very specific: established over two generations, its modernity does not consist in the search of an Italian influence but for a certain simplicity inspired by his spirituality..Bibliographie: Notes bibliogr.
